Hypertension is the leading modifiable risk factor for global cardiovascular disease, responsible for an estimated 10.8 million deaths and more than 200 million disability-adjusted life years annually.1 Despite the availability of effective pharmacological and lifestyle interventions, prevalence continues to rise, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where over three-quarters of all cases now occur.2 The condition’s […]

We are excited to welcome Dr C Fielder Camm as one of our touchCARDIO Future Leaders 2025. Dr Camm is currently a cardiology registrar training in electrophysiology and cardiac devices in Oxford, UK. He has previously undertaken a DPhil at the University of Oxford, focusing on the epidemiology of adiposity and its role in the development of atrial fibrillation and continues to have a range of academic interests in the field of arrhythmias and education.

Dr Camm is currently the chair of the Young Cardiovascular Professionals committee of the European Society of Cardiology and immediate past-president of the British Junior Cardiologists Association. He is passionate about the health and wellbeing of cardiovascular professionals and improving cardiology training for all.

In this Q&A, Dr Camm shares his thoughts on how meaningful impacts can be made by early career cardiologists, the possibility of artificial intelligence (AI) for the future of cardiology and the entirety of medicine, and his hopes for the future.

Q. How can aspiring cardiologists make a meaningful impact early in their careers?

In my experience, meaningful impact comes from a combination of three things: finding an issue that is meaningful (not just to you but to the wider community), committing to that issue, and bringing people with you on that journey. Issues could be clinical, academic, societal or beyond. We only have so much time to contribute, and so selecting meaningful projects is so important. However, no one is an island, and it is almost impossible to make a meaningful impact alone. Many of the projects that I am most proud of have been those where I have contributed to ideas spearheaded by other, more insightful, people.

Q. What current development or trend in your speciality excites you the most?

Cardiology is a field that is continuously moving forward, and I am excited about so many directions that it is taking. Within electrophysiology, the development and expansion of pulsed-field ablation offers a range of exciting possibilities for treating arrhythmias. However, while it is probably clichéd to put forward AI (artificial intelligence), this is something that has significant implications for the breadth of cardiology and medicine as a whole. AI has the opportunity to completely revolutionise how we practice medicine and how patients experience their health conditions. Despite this, and while I remain completely excited, this is also a development that intimidates me by the sheer extent of change that it may usher in.

Q. What legacy do you hope to leave in the field of cardiology?

I feel that I’m probably far too early in my career to be thinking about a meaningful legacy. I have had the fortune of being given amazing opportunities so far in my career and have been taught by some amazing clinicians and scientists. I certainly hope that I can make meaningful contributions to the field both clinically and academically. However, the legacy that I would like to leave is that I have given back more to those coming into the future of cardiology than I have taken.
